Hot Springs at Dawn

Waking at 4 am, we drove to a series of thermal springs at 5,000 meters. The one above was shrouded by clouds heavy with snow. Flurries settled on the ground. Despite the darkness, it was easy to sense what step might lead you into the voraciously boiling thermal waters as the snow nearest lthe witch's cauldron melted before even touching the ground. Following the guide's advice about crumbling ground, I stayed a safe distance from the pit, using a sign post as a stand for taking photos of the boys in the pitch black pre-dawn.

We drove down the mountain, headed toward a hot spring and a pancake breakfast located on the edge of the lake.

  1. I now believe that hot springs are the one truly tragic shortage in the US Northeast. It's high time we got some geothermal activity of our own!
